[00:12.370] Four o'clock in the afternoon
[00:15.190] and I didn't feel like very much.
[00:20.210] I said to myself, "Where are you golden boy,
[00:23.110] where is your famous golden touch?"
[00:27.970] I thought you knew where
[00:29.870] all of the elephants lie down,
[00:35.520] I thought you were the crown prince
[00:38.130] of all the wheels in Ivory Town.
[00:43.540] Just take a look at your body now,
[00:47.190] there's nothing much to save
[00:51.150] and a bitter voice in the mirror cries,
[00:53.810] "Hey, Prince, you need a shave."
[00:58.710] Now if you can manage to get
[01:00.710] your trembling fingers to behave,
[01:04.920] why don't you try unwrapping
[01:08.230] a stainless steel razor blade?
[01:11.480] That's right, it's come to this,
[01:16.140] yes it's come to this,
[01:21.100] and wasn't it a long way down,
[01:29.070] wasn't it a strange way down?
[01:36.480] There's no hot water
[01:39.080] and the cold is running thin.
[01:43.840] Well, what do you expect from
[01:45.390] the kind of places you've been living in?
[01:50.390] Don't drink from that cup,
[01:53.100] it's all caked and cracked along the rim.
[01:57.460] That's not the electric light, my friend,
[02:00.960] that is your vision growing dim.
[02:06.570] Cover up your face with soap, there,
[02:10.080] now you're Santa Claus.
[02:13.830] And you've got a gift for anyone
[02:16.440] who will give you his applause.
[02:21.050] I thought you were a racing man,
[02:23.550] ah, but you couldn't take the pace.
[02:27.550] That's a funeral in the mirror
[02:31.360] and it's stopping at your face.
[02:34.210] That's right, it's come to this,
[02:38.770] yes it's come to this,
[02:42.730] and wasn't it a long way down,
[02:50.640] ah wasn't it a strange way down?
[02:59.350] Once there was a path
[03:02.200] and a girl with chestnut hair,
[03:05.560] and you passed the summers
[03:07.860] picking all of the berries that grew there;
[03:13.230] there were times she was a woman,
[03:16.540] oh, there were times she was just a child,
[03:20.540] and you held her in the shadows
[03:24.540] where the raspberries grow wild.
[03:28.450] And you climbed the twilight mountains
[03:32.360] and you sang about the view,
[03:37.160] and everywhere that you wandered
[03:39.240] love seemed to go along with you.
[03:44.290] That's a hard one to remember,
[03:46.950] yes it makes you clench your fist.
[03:50.200] And then the veins stand out like highways,
[03:55.910] all along your wrist.
[03:57.720] And yes it's come to this,
[04:02.430] it's come to this,
[04:06.140] and wasn't it a long way down,
[04:14.610] wasn't it a strange way down?
[04:22.670] You can still find a job,
[04:25.020] go out and talk to a friend.
[04:29.380] On the back of every magazine
[04:31.930] there are those coupons you can send.
[04:36.590] Why don't you join the Rosicrucians,
[04:40.340] they will give you back your hope,
[04:44.000] you can find your love with diagrams
[04:47.550] on a plain brown envelope.
[04:51.610] But you've used up all your coupons
[04:55.370] except the one that seems
[04:59.470] to be written on your wrist
[05:02.520] along with several thousand dreams.
[05:07.590] Now Santa Claus comes forward,
[05:10.290] that's a razor in his mit;
[05:14.190] and he puts on his dark glasses
[05:17.850] and he shows you where to hit;
[05:20.750] and then the cameras pan,
[05:25.760] the stand in stunt man,
[05:30.570] dress rehearsal rag,
[05:36.230] it's just the dress rehearsal rag,
[05:43.990] you know this dress rehearsal rag,
[05:52.010] it's just a dress rehearsal rag.
